Because List Surveys may be sent to past customers, employees, social media followers, or other contacts, you might want your survey to match your branding. The theme editor lets you add your logo, change the background, pick an accent color, and choose which progress indicators respondents see.

Before You Begin
- The theme editor is available for List Surveys on every plan. Panel Surveys use aytm's standard design and can't be customized.
- You need edit access to the survey. If you have view-only access, the Edit Appearance link is greyed out.
Opening the Theme Editor
- Open your List Survey in the Survey Editor.
- Click Edit Appearance in the left sidebar, below Target Market.
- The theme editor opens in a new browser tab. It shows a live preview of your survey with a design panel across the top.
You can also open the theme editor from the Dashboard: open the menu on a draft List Survey and select Theme editor.
The preview is fully clickable, so you can move through your survey and see how each change looks. Answers you enter in the preview aren't recorded. To see the full page without the design panel, click Hide design panel on the right side of the survey's header bar, then Show design panel to bring it back.
Customizing Your Survey
Background
- Choose a library background—use the arrows on the carousel at the top of the design panel to browse aytm's 20 stock backgrounds, then click a thumbnail to apply it.
- Upload your own—click Upload custom background and select an image. It's added to the carousel and applied right away. Backgrounds you've uploaded before, in any of your List Surveys, also appear in the carousel.
⚠️ Note: Clicking the × on a custom background deletes it from your carousel immediately. Cancel doesn't bring it back.
Logo and Header Text
- Logo—click Upload logo and select an image. Your logo appears at a small size (about 150 × 49 pixels) in the top-left corner of the survey's header bar, next to the header text. Once a logo is added, you can click Change logo to replace it or Clear logo to remove it.
- Header text—type up to 70 characters in the Optional header text... field. A counter next to the field shows how many characters you have left. New List Surveys start with the header text "Your participation is highly appreciated!"—edit it, or clear the field if you don't want any header text.
⚠️ Note: The header bar is hidden on mobile devices, so respondents taking your survey on a phone won't see your logo or header text.
Progress Indicators
Both options are turned on by default. Clear a checkbox to hide that indicator from respondents.
- Progress bar—shows respondents their place in the survey. On desktop, the bar runs across the top of the survey; on mobile, it appears under the question title.
- Time prediction—shows respondents an estimate of how long the current question will take (e.g., "This question will take ~ 00:06") in the navigation bar at the bottom of the survey, next to the Next button.
Accent Color
Under Choose accent color, click one of the nine preset colors. The accent color is used for the Next button, the progress bar, and other highlights throughout the survey. [CONFIRM: Full list of elements the accent color reaches—radio buttons, checkboxes, hover states?] Custom colors (hex codes) aren't supported.
Saving Your Changes
Changes aren't saved automatically, and you won't get a warning if you close the tab with unsaved changes—so save before you leave the editor.
- Click Save in the top row of the design panel, to the right of the background carousel.
No confirmation message appears after a successful save. If the save fails, you'll see an error message.
Next to Save, you'll also find these options:
- Cancel—discards your unsaved changes and returns to your last saved theme. It doesn't close the editor.
- Reset to default—restores aytm's default background and accent color. Your logo, header text, and progress indicator settings stay as they are. Click Save to apply the reset.
Image Requirements
These requirements apply to both backgrounds and logos:
- File types: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, SVG, or WebP
- Maximum file size: 30 MB
If a file is too large or in an unsupported format, you'll see an error message and the image won't upload.
💡 Tip: For backgrounds that look sharp on large screens, use images with a resolution of 3840 × 2160. Because the logo displays small, a wide, horizontal version of your logo usually works best.
