Bridge uses one word per thing, deliberately—the same word appears in the interface, in this help center, and in any support conversation you have about your work. This page is the full glossary, grouped by where you'll run into each term.

The Work: Studies and Chats
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Study | One piece of research, from brief to finished report. The thing you're building. |
| Chat | A conversation in Bridge. Most chats belong to a study; a chat can also stand on its own until you turn it into one. |
| Viewer | What you are on a study you didn't create: you get a read-only canvas, a banner saying so, and a conversation of your own. |
| Support | Your conversation with an aytm person, opened from the header pill. Skipper isn't in it, and it never holds a study. |
| Chip | A reference you've attached to a chat so Skipper can draw on it. You attach and detach chips. |
Inside a Study: Stages, Steps, and Cards
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Stage | A top-level phase of a study: design, fielding, and report. The rail down the side of the canvas lists them. |
| Step | A unit of work inside a stage. The design stage has Methodology, Targeting, Sample size & Budget, and Survey Draft. |
| Card | One tile on the canvas, showing a step's work. Cards are what you read; only the Stimuli card takes direct input. |
| Canvas | The area beside the conversation where a study's cards are laid out. |
| Template | The starting point you pick when creating a study. It decides which stages and steps the study has. |
| Stimuli | What your study tests—images for a concept test, wordings for a naming or claims study. |
| Screening questions | Prequalification questions a respondent answers before the survey body. They belong to your audience, and they're written at the Targeting step. |
Each card carries a small status pill in its header:
- To Do: nothing has happened here yet. Where Skipper has guidance for the card, it explains what belongs in it.
- Working: Skipper is on it right now. The wording names the task where there is one (Drafting, Checking reach, Pricing, Preparing data, Building, Validating); on other cards it cycles through words like Thinking or Refining. A percentage appears when one is available.
- Needs work: something went wrong, or Skipper has flagged this card for another pass.
- Done: finished.
The stage rail marks each stage Current, Done, In progress, or Not started, read from the stage itself rather than from its position—so stepping back to Design still shows you a fielding in progress.
The Dock: Items, Stones, and Pearls
Bridge has one dock, and it holds both kinds of work in one order.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Item | One entry in the dock—either a study together with your conversation about it, or a chat with no study. |
| Stone | A study in the dock. Its colour comes from the template it was created from; its outline is its own, so two studies from one template still look different. |
| Pearl | A study-free chat in the dock. The pearl at the foot of the dock is the New study control. |
| Standby | Something you're looking at but haven't worked on. It stands at the live end of the dock and commits you to nothing. Drag it into the column to dock it where you want. |
| Dock / Undock | Put an item into your working set, or take it out. Undocking never deletes anything. |
| Conversion | A chat gaining a study. The pearl becomes a stone and keeps its place in the dock. |
| The aggregate | A single stone standing in for everything past the visible part of the dock, with a count on it. |
💡 Tip: Docking is earned, not clicked. Opening something only puts it on your screen—it joins the dock once you actually work on it. That's why the dock never fills up with things you merely glanced at, and why it has no limit.
Finding Things Again
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| All studies | The table of every study you can see plus your own chats, opened from the header. Filters, sorting, grouping, a column picker, and row actions. |
| Search palette | The ⌘K / Ctrl K overlay. Shows recent work on an empty field, matches titles as you type, and can put a question straight to Skipper. |
| Team picker | The header control that sets which team you're working in. New studies belong to the team it's on. |
| Setup only | A clone option: you get the study's design with no responses, as a new study you can change and launch. |
| Full copy with results | A clone option for finished studies: your copy opens on the report and reads the same responses as the original. You can explore it but not change or relaunch it. |
⚠️ Note: The team picker and the team column in All studies only appear when you belong to more than one team. If you have a single team, you'll see its name as a plain label instead.
Study Statuses
Every study shows one status in the All studies table. You never set these yourself—they follow the work.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Design | You and Skipper are still building it. |
| Ready to Launch | The design is finished and checkout is waiting. The study stays here for the whole of checkout. |
| Fielding | Payment has cleared. Your survey is waiting for our team's review and launch, or collecting responses. |
| Analyzing | Collection has finished. Your report's data is being prepared, or the report itself is being written. |
| Report | The report is finished. |
| Refund | You stopped the study early and the responses that weren't delivered are refunded. There's no report. This is final—the study becomes read-only and can't be reverted. |
