DIY Concept Mapping lets you send survey data from your Results page straight into a Concept Portal in Insights Portal. You can convert a Concept Lab you've already built, reuse one from another report, or set up a new mapping from scratch—then preview the data and push it to your portal.

Terminology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Concept Lab | A block in your survey report that compares concepts across a set of measures. |
| Concept Mapping | A Concept Lab set up to send its data to Insights Portal. |
| Concept Portal | The Insights Portal destination that stores and displays your mapped concept data. |
| Entity | Each concept you're measuring—for example, each product idea or package design tested in your survey. |
| Attribute | A metric tracked for every entity, such as purchase intent or uniqueness, built from your survey questions. |
| Variables for filtering | Survey variables sent along with your data so you can filter results inside the Concept Portal. |
Before You Begin
- Insights Portal Mapping must be enabled for your account. It isn't included in any package by default. Reach out to your Account Manager or the Customer Engagement team to have it added to your Results page.
- You'll need a Concept Portal in your account. If no portals are listed when you push, your data goes to all Concept Portals under your account.
- Entity images come from your survey. You can only assign images that are already used in the survey—you can't upload new ones during mapping.
Opening the Mapping Panel
All three ways of setting up a Concept Mapping start from the same place.
- Open your survey's Results page.
- Click Mapping in the Results sidebar. The Insights Portal Mapping panel opens.
The panel has three sections:
- Create new mapping—drag the Concept Mapping button into your report to start a new mapping.
- Saved mappings—every Concept Lab and Concept Mapping saved in any of this survey's reports. Deleting a mapping from its report also removes it from this list.
- Pinned mappings—mappings you've pinned for quick access.
If you don't see Mapping in the sidebar, Insights Portal Mapping isn't enabled for your account yet. See Before You Begin.
Converting a Concept Lab to Concept Mapping
If the report you're viewing already has a Concept Lab, you can turn it into a Concept Mapping in one click.
- Find the Concept Lab block in your report.
- Click the Convert to Concept Mapping link in the top-right corner of the block.
- Follow the steps in Running the Comparison and Pushing to a Portal.
Conversion is one-way—once a block becomes a Concept Mapping, it can't be switched back to a Concept Lab. Give your Concept Lab a clear name before converting so it's easy to find later in Saved mappings. The Convert to Concept Mapping link doesn't appear on read-only reports.
Importing a Concept Lab from Saved Mappings
To reuse a Concept Lab or Concept Mapping from another report in the same survey, pull it in from Saved mappings.
- Open the Insights Portal Mapping panel (see Opening the Mapping Panel).
- Find your mapping under Saved mappings.
- Drag and drop it into your report. Concept Labs come in as Concept Mappings.
- Click Add a variable to add any variables you'd like to filter by in the portal. Imported mappings start with no filter variables.
- Follow the steps in Running the Comparison and Pushing to a Portal.
Creating a New Concept Mapping
When you create a new Concept Mapping, aytm looks for question groups in your survey's group logic that can be mapped automatically. You can use a detected group as-is, adjust it, or build a Custom setup.
Choosing a Setup
- Open the Insights Portal Mapping panel (see Opening the Mapping Panel).
- Drag and drop Concept Mapping from Create new mapping into your report.
- Click the setup dropdown at the top of the block and choose a detected group—for example, Group 2 (Q5-Q12) 4 entities, 3 attributes—or select Custom setup.
A new mapping opens on the first detected group. To be detected, the questions in a group need to line up: the same question type, the same number of answer options, and at least two positive answer options. If no groups qualify, the mapping opens on Custom setup.
Adding Entities
- Type a label for the first concept in the Please type a label... field.
- Click Add an entity and repeat for each concept you want to measure.
- Optional: Click the image icon next to an entity's label and choose one of the survey's images, or No image.
The image icon only appears if your survey contains images, and each entity needs a different image.
Adding Attributes
- In the Questions/Subquestions field, type the question references for the attribute, separated by commas—one reference per entity, in the same order as your entities. Write subquestions as
Q4SQ2. - Click the dropdown next to the field and choose what to track—an individual answer option, a box score, or the mean. See Available Measures below.
- Type a label for the attribute in its Label field. Each attribute label must be unique.
- Click Add an attribute and repeat for each metric you'd like to track.
If the questions you list don't line up—for example, they have different numbers of answer options—the field turns red and no measures are available. In auto-detected groups, you may see NULL where an entity has no matching question.
To track more than one measure for the same attribute (e.g., both Top 2 Box and Mean), clone the attribute and choose a different measure for each copy.
Available Measures
| Question type | Measures you can choose |
|---|---|
| Single choice, Matrix, Star rating, Smiley rating, and single-select Progressive Matrix | Any individual answer option, Top 2 Box, Top 3 Box, Bottom 2 Box, Bottom 3 Box, T-Weighted (100% + 50%), Mean, and Mean (reverse coded) |
| Multiple choice | Individual answer options only—no box scores or mean |
Adding Variables for Filtering
Filter variables let you slice your data inside the Concept Portal. The block header shows how many you've added—for example, 2 variables for filtering.
- Click the variable dropdown in a row and choose a variable.
- Type a label for the variable.
- Click Add a variable to add more rows.
The variable list includes single choice, multiple choice, matrix, slider, and ranking questions; Virtual Questions; system variables; piping variables; custom uploaded variables; and an Excluded Questions: group for questions removed from the report. Text-input variables aren't available.
⚠️ Note: A new Concept Mapping starts with two empty variable rows. Filter variables are optional, but you need to fill in or delete those empty rows before you can push. Any entity, attribute, or variable without a label blocks the push.
When you're done, follow the steps in Running the Comparison and Pushing to a Portal.
Running the Comparison and Pushing to a Portal
However you set up your Concept Mapping, the last steps are the same.
- Click Run comparison. The chart that appears previews your data. This step is required—you can't push until the comparison finishes running.
- Click the Select... dropdown and choose the Concept Portal to store your data.
- Click PUSH TO PORTAL. The button changes to PUSHING TO PORTAL, then PUSHED TO PORTAL when it's done.
If your account has no Concept Portals listed, you won't see a dropdown. Instead, the block reads Enabled in all Concept Portals under [your account] account, and the button reads PUSH TO PORTALS—your data goes to all of them.
If something's missing, you'll see a message explaining what to fix—for example, Please select a portal for data to appear in or Missing Labels: Entities, Attributes and Variables must have labels to add data to a portal.
⚠️ Note: Pushing a preset group that's already in Insights Portal overwrites all the original data for that group. To avoid overwriting, put each custom setup in its own Concept Mapping.
💡 Tip: It may take a few minutes for your data to appear in Insights Portal. If the portal is already open in another tab, click Refresh in the portal header to pull in the new data. Your survey ID is added to the portal's data sources filter, and the new or updated concepts appear in the current view.
