In multiple choice questions—checkbox questions where respondents can select more than one answer—your results can be calculated two different ways. A survey with 400 respondents might collect 582 answer selections, so the percentages you see depend on which total the system divides by. On your stats page you can switch between a Respondents view and a Responses view at any time.

At a Glance
| View | What 100% represents | Answers the question |
|---|---|---|
| Respondents (default) | The total number of people who answered the question—400 in the example below. | What share of people picked this answer? |
| Responses | The total number of answer choices selected—582 in the example below. | What share of all selections did this answer capture? |
Respondents
Respondents is the default view when you open your stats page. Here, the system calculates your answer choices against the total number of respondents in your survey, so the percentages describe how many people chose each option.
Because respondents can select several answers, these percentages will often add up to more than 100% across the answer list—that's expected, not an error.
Responses
In the Responses view, the system calculates your answer choices against the total number of responses—every answer choice selected within the question—so the full answer list adds up to 100%.
In the example below, 1000 people completed the survey, but their selections totaled 4084 responses because a single respondent could choose multiple answers. Each answer choice is shown as its share of those 4084 selections.
💡 Tip: Use the Respondents view when you want reach—"62% of people chose this". Use the Responses view when you want share of mentions—how much of the total attention each option captured.
Switching Between Responses and Respondents
Your results always open in the Respondents view. To switch to the Responses view:
- Click into the View Options tab.
- Select the Count responses in multiple choice Qs checkbox.
Your stats page updates immediately and applies the view across every multiple choice question in the survey. To go back, clear the same checkbox.
⚠️ Note: This setting isn't per question—turning it on switches all multiple choice questions in your survey to the Responses view at once.
