Adding Question-level notes
- Click the note icon on the right side of the question header on which you would like to leave a note.
- Type or paste your notes into the Start typing... text box.
- Click Save to close the dialog box, and save the note on the question.
- Click Save as or Save Changes at the top of your report to retain the Question-level note on your report.
⚠️ Note: The note icon moves once a note exists. It sits in the question header while the question has no note, and inside the note itself afterward. You can also double-click an existing note to open it for editing.
Adding a Storytelling Note via Data Lab
- Click the Data Lab tab in the left menu, then click the Storytelling Note component to add it to your report, or drag it into place.
- A newly added note opens in edit mode automatically. Type or paste your notes into the Start Typing… text field.
- To give the note a more specific title, click the pencil icon in the upper right corner of the note.
- Click Add an illustration to attach an optional image to the note, or drag an image from your hard drive and drop it over the highlighted drop zone. With an image already in place, the button reads Replace illustration.
- With a photo uploaded, click the trashcan icon to remove it from the note. The trashcan only appears while the note is in edit mode.
- Click the Save button to close out the dialog box.
- Click Save as or Save Changes to retain the Storytelling Note on your report.
💡 Tip: Uploaded images can be up to 30MB.
Formatting and editing notes
Both Question-level notes and Storytelling Notes use the same rich text editor, with the same limits and the same authorship footer.
- Rich text formatting: bold, italic, underline, H1, blockquote, and bulleted or numbered lists.
- Character limit: up to 9,999 characters per note. A character counter appears in the lower right corner of the editor as you type.
- Authorship footer: every note carries a Last edited by [name], [N] days ago footer. Notes written by Skipper show Written by Skipper instead.
⚠️ Note: Notes are staged as local report changes until you click Save as or Save Changes at the top of the report. Closing the report without saving discards them.
Hyperlinking text
- In a Question-level note or a Storytelling Note, type or paste the full link. Links beginning with http://, https://, or www. are all recognized.
- Add the text you would like to be hyperlinked behind the link, in parentheses.
There may not be a space between the end of the link and the open parenthesis. Within the parentheses, use an underscore to indicate a space.
When you click Save, the text in parentheses will appear as a link that will open in a new tab.
💡 Tip: If you leave off the parenthesized label, the link renders as just the hostname—for example, aytm.com—rather than the full URL.
How notes appear in PowerPoint exports
Both note types flow into PowerPoint exports, but they land differently.
Question-level notes
A Question-level note is written to the presenter notes of its Question slide, and also appears on the slide face as a comment panel. The on-slide version is truncated at 500 characters, with [Please see slide presenter notes]... appended. The full text is always available in the presenter notes.
Storytelling Notes
A Storytelling Note becomes its own slide. A single note can produce more than one slide: text is paginated at roughly 95 characters per line across 22 lines per slide, and in Skipper reports the illustration and the text are split onto separate slides.
