Device targeting lets you require that respondents complete your survey on a specific device type: mobile or desktop. When the right device matters for your methodology, this feature helps you enforce that condition at the respondent level.
Common Use Cases by Device
Some survey types are inherently tied to a particular device environment. Use the guidance below to decide when device selection adds value to your study.
Mobile only — best for mobile-native experiences:
- Image upload surveys
- Mobile app testing
- Ad testing
Desktop only — best for detail-dependent content:
- Shelf tests
- Label evaluations
- Images requiring higher resolution
How to Select a Device
Device selection is a dropdown located on the Target Market page, below the demographic traits section. Choose Mobile, Desktop, or leave it unset to allow any device (the default).
Once a device is selected, any respondent who enters the survey on the wrong device type will be prompted to switch to the correct device before proceeding.
How Device Selection Works
- API Sample Partners — all API sample partners are mapped and fully available for both mobile and desktop device selections.
- IR Estimation — device functions as a demographic trait. Respondents who don't switch to the correct device remain as incompletes and won't affect your IR estimate.
- Survey Preview — when previewing in respondent mode, the preview will reflect the device type you've selected.
- Device Quotas — quotas by device aren't available at the Target Market page level. Contact your support team to discuss quota options.
